AIGP vs EN 18274 vs nothing: what each actually signals
A sittable exam, a competence framework with no exam yet, and no credential at all, read for what a hiring manager should actually take from each.
Sentient Staff is not affiliated with or endorsed by IAPP or CEN. This is our own read of what each option actually signals to a hiring manager, not a recommendation to pursue any specific one!
AIGP: a sittable exam that signals breadth
IAPP's AI Governance Professional (AIGP) certification is an actual exam a practitioner can sit today, covering AI governance broadly, legal frameworks, risk management, and organisational implementation. What it signals is breadth of study across the governance landscape. It does not, on its own, signal hands-on experience delivering a specific finding inside a live organisation, which is a different and in some ways harder-to-fake skill.
EN 18274: a competence framework with no exam yet
CEN's emerging European competence framework for this role describes what AI Ethicist's competence should look like in more granular, practice-oriented terms than AIGP's broader governance scope, but there is no sittable exam attached to it yet. A practitioner cannot currently hold "an EN 18274 certification" because that credential does not exist yet in a form anyone can earn, whatever a CV might imply.
No credential at all: what that does and does not mean
Given that EN 18274 is not yet sittable, the absence of a formal credential says very little on its own, most practitioners currently working in this field do not have one, because there has not been one to have. What it means is that a hiring manager needs a different signal entirely, which is exactly the case our piece on building evidence without a certification makes.
What a hiring manager should actually take from each
AIGP as a reasonable signal of governance breadth, worth noting rather than weighting too heavily on its own. EN 18274, once it exists in sittable form, likely to become the more specific practice-based AI Ethicist signal, worth watching. And in the meantime, a documented record of specific findings from real engagements outweighs the presence or absence of either.
